"Schut Papermill" is the only survived specialized papermill in the east of the Netherlands. Hundreds of papermills were active in the part of the country in the 18th century. Van Gelder Papermill started in 1618 and was bought by the Schut family in 1710. The Papermill became a part of a specialized group of papermills in 1982 called "De Gelderse Papiergroep". In 1998 Schut Papermill was sold to the French papermill Claire Fontaine.

Around 1800 some people of Van Gelder went to Japan to learn about the Japanese ways of papermaking. Based on these trips they developed a paper called "Simili Japon" . This paper is still produced today.

The papers, although fabricated from a base pulp of high quality, are not truly mouldmade: they are produced on a unique machine where the web evolves at the same speed as on a cylinder-mould. Continuous production can be maintained through the advantage of a constant pulp supply, and the hybrid machine shares its drying end with the cylinder-mould machine. The Schut range of papers, although technically termed "machinemade", are actually much closer to their mouldmade cousins.

Off white paper, with history, originally from the famous van Gelder papermills. An "authentic" papier. Also known as "old Dutch". 50% cotton, 50% cellulose, waterleaf (unsized). Absorbs both ink and moisture very well. The fibres are "open" because no glue in the paper. Therefore, humidify only slightly. pH neutral, acid free, ageing resistant, good absorbing capacity, soft surface. Excellent as etching paper, but also for typography. Not recommended for water based inks. (ink may bleed in the fibres).

This "off white" 300 grams- 140 lb, 50% cotton and 50% cellulose paper is multifunctional and will have an excellent performance for using a lot different printmaking techniques. It can be easily used for copperplate, monotype, etching, silkscreen printing and lithography but can be used as a multifunctional paper. Even for water colour and drawing. The paper is acid free, pH neutral, chlorine free, internal sized and external sized and has 2 natural deckled edges. The surface is smooth. The warm white gives an extra detail to the design. As there are no optical brighteners, it can be used for archive quality. It meets ISO 9706 (but is not certified). The paper is made on an "hybrid" Fourdrinier machine at low speed. Very popular paper. Because of the sizing (both machine and surface sized), very good for waterbased inks, like Akua Intaglio. In the past this paper was developed by Schut as offset- and litho paper, but it proved to be a universal paper, for a reasonable price. Some reactions: "very good performance at intaglio" "smooth surface good absorption"

Off white paper, with a rich history, originally from the "van Gelder" papermill. An "authentic" paper, also known as "old Dutch". Available until end of stock.. 50% cotton, 50% cellulose, no sizing. (waterleaf). Absorbs ink and moisture very well. The fibres are "open" due to lack of sizing. Hence, only humidify moderately. pH neutral, acid free, resistant to aging, absorbing capacity, soft surface. Very well as etching paper, and typography (especially lead type). Less suitable for water based ink (risk of bleeding due to open fibres.). No watermark.
