Printmaking Paper, produced by Zerkall

Samples 18x23cm (7x9")

Since many centuries paper is produced in this mill; letter paper, stationary, but also paper for the graphic arts. A special adaption of the machine makes it possible to create paper with four "deckle-edges"
All the qualities are acid free, neutral sized, alkaline buffered with calcium carbonate and contain no optical brightener. They meet the requirements for permanence according to ANSI/NISO Z 39.48-1992 and DIN ISO 9706. Because each item is Mould Made with natural deckle edges, format specifications have to be regarded as approximate measurements. Besides these stock items Zerkall offers special makings for individual purposes.

Zerkall's German Ingres is an excellent choice for charcoal and pastel drawing and is also a favorite paper for the Book Arts, known for it’s antique appearance and selection of fourteen hues.

Since the 16th century, Zerkall has produced some of the finest papers in Europe. Their German Ingres is an excellent choice for charcoal and pastel drawing and is also a favorite paper for the Book Arts, known for it’s antique appearance and selection of fourteen hues.
This series of laid papers contains a white, and a subtle range of colors , as well as three soft tints. The paper is watermarked with “INGRES” and the Zerkall Lion, in opposite corners.
Ingres paper is a type of drawing paper. It is a laid finish paper of light to medium weight, and it is not as strong or as durable as Bristol paper. Laid finish refers to the imprint of regular screen pattern of a papermaker's mould. Ingres is not necessarily a handmade paper, but is produced to replicate the properties of laid paper. Ingres is often used for charcoal and pastel drawing.[1] It is also used as an endpaper in books.
The development of ingres paper for drawing is ascribed to the French Neoclassical artist Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), although modern ingres papers can differ from those actually used by Ingres. Important is that the pattern is a laid mesh. The laid effect creates a toothy grain of close lines on one side and a mottled surface on the reverse. The toothiness allows the paper to take charcoal easily and evenly. Ingres paper is favored in book arts for its antique appearance and pH neutrality.
Ingres paper has a high rag content and is gelatin sized. It is available in a variety of colors.

Since the 16th century Zerkall makes some of the best papers in Europe. This paper is similar to Ingres paper, but has no watermark. It is intended and "luxury stationery" (Ausstattungspapier). The paper has a laid structure (sieve texture) and is relatively rough. It is excellent for pen and ink as well as charcoal or pastel drawings. It is also a very good paper for book art (covers). The 6060 series has three colors; light gray, light blue and rose. This is the rose, though I would not describe it as the colour rose, but as "light cream." The paper contains cotton and is buffered with calcium carbonate and sized internally with gelatin. It takes the ink well, without flowing out.

This sheet is only a small part of a very deep range of book, printmaking, drawing and watercolor papers produced by one of the oldest mouldmade paper mills in Germany - Zerkall, located about one hour from the historic city of Cologne.
One of the interesting facts about this mills manufacturing capabilities is that they do not produce roll stock; this as a result of their machinery set up which can only manufacture in single sheet format.
In 1999 Zerkall was chosen by Barry Moser of Pennyroyal Press to produce a special run of this paper with a specially designed publisher's watermark for a limited edition printing of The Bible.
There is also a very slight natural corner curl to their papers, but this characteristic has never gotten in the way of the papers performing incredibly well for all their designed mediums and has done so for over 4 centuries.
