Printmaking Processes: Lithography

Lithography works on the principle that grease and water repel each other. There is no carving involved. The artist draws on a stone with a greasy crayon and then covers the stone with a thin film of water. the oily ink will stick to the greasy image but not to the water-covered areas.

Stone Litho Flatbed Press Furnival Printing Machine

This is the 'Improved Express Litho Printing Machine' manufactured by Furnival and co. It was exhibited at the Inventions Exhibition in 1885 and awarded the gold medal at the Liverpool exhibition in 1886. It was purchased in 1920 by Axon and Harrison to produce decals. It is still owned and used by Axon and Harrison (now trading as Decorative Decals - www.decorativedecals.co.uk)
