Even though the roller is prepared, the roller must be scraped regularly during use. Rollers should always be scraped during the following situations;
Even pressure should be used while scraping. If the pressure varies too much, this can lead to damage to the leather. When the roll has been scraped all the way around, the roll is turned over completely, causing the roll to be scraped in the other direction. The grain direction in the leather is important. If you scrape against the direction of the fibers, most of the fibers will come loose. This is important during the preparation of the roll, but during "normal" scraping, if the roll has been prepared a long time ago, it is better not to exert too much pressure when scraping against the fiber direction. The normal scraping procedure is therefore first with the fiber direction, then against the direction, and finally with the fibers again. Note the hem that runs the length of the roll. In old rolls, this seam will often be filled with ink, which will force it open. This may result in seam marks on the stone. The seam should therefore be scraped clean, but carefully so as not to damage the seam. |
