Alum serves as a base for the majority of lake pigments.

  • Alum is used to fix pigments on a surface for example in paper marbling.
  • Alum is an ingredient in some recipes for homemade modeling compounds intended for use by children. These are often called "play clay" or "play dough" for their similarity to "Play-Doh".
  • In traditional Japanese art, alum and animal glue were dissolved in water, forming a liquid known as dousa, and used as an undercoat for paper sizing.

Ferric chloride

Ferric chloride is being used as a mordant for copper and zinc a long time. There are advantages in comparison with etching with nitric acid:

  • it etches more regularly than nitric acid
  • "under etching" is less an issue than with nitric acid
  • less aggressive with makes it more precise
  • safer, no aggressive fumes
  • it is a salt and not an acid.

Disadvantages:

  • it etches slower than nitric acid
  • the liquid is not transparent, you cannot see the etching process visually.
