Ferric chloride
Ferric chloride is being used as a mordant for copper and zinc a long time. There are advantages in comparison with etching with nitric acid:

Ferric chloride granules (crystals)
To make liquid ferric chloride, mix 1 part ferric chloride with 1 part water by weight. The granules can also be added to existing liquid ferric chloride. Use the acid meter to determine whether the desired concentration has been reached. Please note: A stronger concentration of ferric chloride is not the same as a more aggressive etching agent. A lower concentration of ferric chloride often etches faster than a high concentration. So try it out.
