The use of a leather litho roller.

In the hands of a professional printer, a leather scroll is a sensitive instrument capable of reproducing every nuance of the lithographic image in print. The following factors are important in this regard:

  • Lots of downward pressure on the roller results in more ink transfer.
  • The more the leather handles are clamped around the wooden handles, the more ink transfer there will be.
  • Slow rolling gives more ink transfer.
  • Rolling in quickly may cause the stone to dry too quickly. This can also cause the ink to end up in the wrong places!
  • Rolling in quickly, with light pressure and thick ink, can lift the ink out of places it shouldn't be.
  • Sloppy and too slow rolling can cause too much ink to get on the stone. Many printers therefore give a quick final pass over the stone to remove the excess ink and "sharpen" the image
