Multiliners (grooved engraving tools)
 Depending on the type of groove you want to make in the plate, there are burins with square, diamond-shaped, round and oval tips. In addition, there are ‘multi-liners’, pointed engraving chisels, etc. The shape of the tip translates into the line that is printed. The less rounded the tip, the sharper the line will be. Multiliners are used to engrave multiple lines parallel to each other. Multiliners are used to cut parallel lines in a metal plate. This can be part of an image, or it can be used to create a grey value (tone value). It is possible to use these tools to draw parallel lines in etching ground, but Lyons, for example, has special tools called ‘scratch board tools’ and ‘half tone rakes’ that are better suited for this purpose. |
