Polymetaal

Een zuurweger (Beaumé-meter) wordt gebruikt om het gewicht aan te geven van de vloeistof. De zwartrode punt is verzwaard, zodat de zuurweger als een dobber in het zuur zal drijven. De schaal loopt van 0-70° Beaumé. In water zal de zuurweger zover zakken dat de meter 0 aangeeft. Des te zwaarder de vloeistof des te minder ver de zuurweger in de vloestof zal zakken. Er is per soort etsvloeistof een relatie aan te geven tussen de concentratie en het aantal graden Beaumé. Deze relatie is echter indicatief. IJzerchloride van 40% concentratie is ongeveer 43° Beaumé. IJzerchloride van 72% is ongeveer 48° Beaumé.

Ferric chloride is being used as a mordant for copper and zinc a long time. There are advantages in comparison with etching with nitric acid:

• it etches more regularly than nitric acid
• "under etching" is less an issue than with nitric acid
• less aggressive with makes it more precise
• safer, no aggressive fumes
• it is a salt and not an acid.

Disadvantages:

• it etches slower than nitric acid
• the liquid is not transparent, you cannot see the etching process visually.

Iron chloride granules (crystals)
To make liquid iron chloride, mix1 part (by weight) of iron chloride with 1 part (by weight) of water.
One can also use the granules to add to existing liquid iron chloride. Then use the acido-meter to determine if the desired concentration is reached.
Note: A stronger concentration of iron chloride is not the same as an aggressive etchant. Often a lower concentration of iron chloride is faster than a high concentration. So try out.
